Why we always say our translation is made by machine

MulingStream translates with artificial intelligence, and we say so everywhere: in our terms, in our privacy notice, and to the people running a room. Here is why we think every listener deserves to know, and what we do to make the translation worthy of their trust.

We say it plainly

The translation in a MulingStream room is made by machine, using artificial intelligence. It is very good, and it can still be wrong. It is not a certified translation.

We say this in our Terms of Service and in our Privacy notice, and we ask everyone who runs a room to let the listeners know that the room is translated live by machine.

Why it matters

A listener trusts what they hear. A person who hears a sermon, a vow or a medical briefing in their own language deserves to know how it reached them, so they can judge it the way they would judge any translation. Telling them is a matter of respect, and it is also what the law increasingly expects of anyone who uses artificial intelligence with the public.

A listener deserves to know how the words reached them.

It also keeps the right things in human hands. For anything where an error matters, a medical instruction, a legal term, a safety announcement, the original words are the ones to check. We say that too.

Machine made does not mean careless

Saying the translation is made by machine is not an excuse for a poor one. A sermon is the hardest test translation can face: Scripture, names, sayings and stories, each of which has to arrive meaning what it meant. So we work on faithfulness, room by room:

We test it on real sermons every week, and change what does not hold up. Scripture, names and numbers are kept intact. When something is wrong, the people in the room tell us, and we read every message.

Alongside people, never instead of them

Machine translation does not replace an interpreter, a translation team or anyone's ministry. In many churches it works next to them: it helps the interpreter who falls behind, and it reaches the guest whose language nobody in the team speaks.
